The firm was founded by Alan Kaplan in 2008, a Certified Public Accountant who has over twenty years of experience in senior public accounting and executive financial management roles, specific to government contracting, commercial and non-profit industries.
Prior to founding Kaplan Financial Partners, Mr. Kaplan served in various leadership and ownership positions with government contractors, manufacturing and technology, as well as other commercial companies. He currently serves as the National Vice President and Past National Treasurer of the Navy League of the United States a non-profit organization comprised of 40,000 civilians in more than 240 councils around the world working to support sea service (the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine) members and their families. Navy League does this through a variety of education programs that remind our fellow citizens that the United States is a maritime nation whose national economic and security interests are inextricably tied to the freedom of the seas. Mr. Kaplan serves on the Navy League’s Steering Committee, Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
Mr. Kaplan’s experience includes being a past owner of a Navy missile defense engineering government contractor, Director for RSM McGladrey, Inc.’s government contracting practice, one of the largest accounting and consulting firms internationally, and was also part of the Grant Thornton, LLP government contracting and non-profit team, another major international accounting and consulting firm. He also served as the Chief Financial Officer of various commercial companies.
The majority of Mr. Kaplan’s accounting, finance and regulatory compliance experience has been utilized building stakeholder value in non-compliant and underperforming organizations through facilitating internal growth, regulatory compliance, venture capital/valuation events, as well as executing reorganizations, re-pricing and cost-cutting measures. He has been instrumental in helping government contractors and non-profit organizations gain control over financial affairs and regulatory compliance.
Mr. Kaplan’s expertise is well recognized by his peers, previous companies and partners, where he successfully completed his various lead roles to reorganize troubled financial and operational situations, as well create and maintain stakeholder value. He has been, and continues to be, the trusted advisor to several senior executives and business owners.
During 2003 Mr. Kaplan was elected to the Board of Directors of Analex Corporation, a defense contractor, trading as NLX on the American Exchange. During his tenure on the Board of Directors of Analex Corporation, Mr. Kaplan served on the Audit Committee and as its Finance Specialist. Mr. Kaplan served as an independent Director in Analex Corporation’s $25 million transaction with Pequot Capital, a private equity fund based in New York.
Mr. Kaplan graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Maryland and obtained one of the top ten scores in the Maryland May 1994 CPA Board Exam.
Mr. Kaplan is a member of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Surface Navy Association (SNA), Association of the United States Army (AUSA), the Navy League of the United States (NLUS), and the Air Force Association (AFA).
